What We Do
Our philosophy is based on compassionate care. We incorporate the strategies of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for ABA, practical Functional Assessment and Skill Based Training, and principles of assent ABA. We have particular expertise in children with the most challenging behavior.
How Does ABA Work in Practice?
ABA therapy services are provided in your home with parents, siblings, extended family, and caregivers and in community settings to optimize natural learning opportunities and to promote the generalization of skills learned. The intensity of therapy services provided is based upon the child’s unique needs and families’ priorities. Programs are designed with the ultimate goal of improving the child’s quality of life. To achieve this goal, we individually tailor programs that address functional skills, reduce and replace challenging behaviors, and apply natural language strategies to enhance communication and social skills in children with autism.
Parent education and training provides parents with direct one-on-one support and coaching to assist parents with learning the basics of ABA. In addition, our unique parent consultation model is designed to equip families with essential skills necessary to apply the science of ABA to teach new skills, increase communication, and reduce challenging behaviors in everyday life.
We are also available to consult, collaborate, and train in the principles of ABA and other topics that promote education and awareness of autism and the science of ABA and community collaboration around the specific needs of children, families, and caregivers.
Our therapy is intensive. We work a minimum of 9 hours per week. We typically focus on one or more of the areas listed below, making sure to work with both the child and the parents to prioritize behaviors/skills to improve upon.
Communication
Effective communication is key to enhancing play, social interaction, social and emotional health, and supporting positive behavior in the home and community.
Social Skills
Social skills at home and in the community include asking and advocating, taking turns, using words politely, asking for what they want, playing with others, and demonstrating flexibility in play, problem solving, and taking others’ perspective. We also help your child learn how to read the environment and other people and address strategies to identify and negotiate bullying and teasing.
Daily Living
This might include eating, sleeping, dressing, toilet training, and chores around the house. This could also mean preparing healthy meals and snacks and grocery shopping.
Pre Academics
We can support your child’s success at school by teaching skills needed to access academic instruction. This includes following directions, waiting for a turn, tolerating frustration, working in a group, and increasing focus and attention.
Challenging Behaviors
We specialize in working with you and your child on challenging behaviors. We start with the understanding that behavior is rooted in your child’s attempt to communicate. We work to enhance alternate behaviors that are more likely to help your child get what they want (or accept that they cannot) in a way that works better within your family and the community. There is power in teaching children they are in control of their behavior.
Safety Skills
Safety skills at home and in the community are critical for the child’s well being. We help them understand road and car safety, stranger danger, and proper use of household appliances. This can also include individual safety in the kitchen or around the house.
